In Sweden, it is mandatory to use winter tires between December 1 and March 31 in winter road conditions.

Winter Tires in Sweden: Rules and Requirements

In Sweden, it is mandatory to use winter tires between December 1 and March 31 in winter road conditions, which include snow, ice, slush, or frost on the road or shoulder. Winter tires can be studded or non-studded friction tires. For passenger cars and light vehicles up to 3.5 tons, a minimum tread depth of 3 millimeters is required for winter tires. For trucks, buses, and passenger cars over 3.5 tons, winter tires must have a tread depth of at least 5 millimeters.

From December 1 2024, it will also be mandatory for winter tires to bear the 'Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake' symbol if they are not studded.

Note! It is not allowed to use both studded and non-studded tires on the same vehicle.

Ban on Studded Tires

Between April 16 and September 30, it is prohibited to use studded tires unless there is, or is expected to be, winter road conditions.

Rules on Winter Tires in Sweden for Foreign Vehicles

The rules regarding winter tires also apply to foreign vehicles traveling to and from Sweden.

Exceptions to Winter Tire Regulations

A ban on studded tires may occur in certain locations where only friction tires are allowed. Exceptions to the winter tire requirement exist for certain situations, such as traveling to inspection facilities and for vehicles older than thirty years.

Winter Tires in Denmark: Rules and Requirements

In Denmark, there is no law requiring the use of winter tires; however, studded tires are only allowed in the period from November 1 to April 15. The tires on passenger and commercial vehicles must always have a tread depth of at least 1.6 millimeters everywhere. However, if you are driving in snowy conditions, it is recommended that you use all-season or winter tires with a minimum tread depth of 4 mm.
